The first three words of every bullet point determine whether a human recruiter keeps reading or skims past. Worse, enterprise applicant tracking systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Taleo) look for high-potency action verbs that correlate with ownership and high-performer profiles. If your bullets open with 'Responsible for', 'Assisted with', 'Worked on', or 'Helped to', your resume reads like a passive job description rather than an active record of accomplishments.
1. Engineering & Technical Architecture: Replace 'built' and 'coded' with verbs that prove scale: Spearheaded, Architected, Engineered, Overhauled, Orchestrated, Automated, Deployed, Standardized, Decoupled, Accelerated. Example: 'Architected distributed Kafka event pipeline handling 95k req/sec at sub-14ms p99 latency, slashing cloud infrastructure costs by $340,000.'
2. Executive Leadership & Management: Replace 'managed' and 'supervised' with verbs that demonstrate vision: Championed, Directed, Mobilized, Restructured, Formulated, Mentored, Cultivated, Piloted, Steered. Example: 'Mobilized 42-engineer cross-functional department across 3 time zones to deliver enterprise SOC2 compliance 6 weeks ahead of audit schedule.'
3. Data, Analytics & Machine Learning: Replace 'analyzed' and 'looked at' with rigorous investigative verbs: Synthesized, Quantified, Modeled, Uncovered, Extracted, Forecasted, Calibrated, Benchmarked, Validated. Example: 'Synthesized telemetry across 4.2M daily active sessions, uncovering friction point in checkout flow that lifted conversion by 3.8% ($1.2M ARR).'
4. Operations, Growth & Revenue: Replace 'improved' and 'grew' with commercial ROI verbs: Maximized, Captured, Scaled, Negotiated, Slashed, Surpassed, Generated, Eliminated, Streamlined. Example: 'Negotiated tier-1 carrier contracts across 6 regional fulfillment hubs, capturing $4.2M in annual recurring operational savings.'
The Google XYZ Formula Connection: Notice how every top-tier bullet follows Google's formula: Accomplished [X], as measured by [Y], by doing [Z]. The action verb anchors the [Z] action, the metric provides the [Y] proof, and the business impact delivers the [X] value.
